Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park
Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park occupies 2,888 acres 2.5 miles northwest of Marietta off I-75 exit 269, then 4 mi. w. on OLD US 41. In June 1864, Gen. Joseph E. Johnston's Confederate Army, retreating before Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman's march to Atlanta, took up a strong position on Kennesaw (KEN-i-saw) Mountain in the path of the invading forces. Sherman, however, ultimately forced Johnston and his troops to abandon the mountain and retreat south.
Earthworks from this battle are well preserved. A paved road to the crest of Kennesaw Mountain has fine views; around the crest is a trail with maps illustrating the conflict. The visitor center at the foot of the mountain on OLD US 41 offers audiovisual programs and exhibits. Living history demonstrations and temporary exhibits also are available. Picnicking is permitted in designated areas. Allow 2 hours minimum. Mon.-Fri. 8:30-5, Sat.-Sun. 8:30-6, during DST; daily 8:30-5, rest of year. Closed Jan. 1, Thanksgiving and Dec. 25. Free. Phone (770) 427-4686.
